The "Leal Legión Extremeña" was created by John Downie in 1810 during the Badajoz Campaing. It was formed by 3.000 "extremeños" (people from Extremadura). Downie was a successful merchant who suffered an economic set back after which he joined the Army as suggested by Sir Thomas Picton.

Not used to the Military obedience, and supported by the Marqués de la Romana, he created the Legion to act independently from Wellington's command .
