The new uniform regulation of 1798 introduced a new headwear for the line infantry. This new headwear consisted of a black laquered leather helmet six and a half inches in height. It was topped witht w a wool crest of black over yellow, runing from the top to the back. It was reinforced at the sides by four leather round bands. |

A large brass plate was placed at the front of the helmet. The Emperor's Francis II cypher was embossed on it. |

Later the front brass plate's cypher was changed to "FI" when Francis assumed the title of Emperor of Austria.
