The Saint Louis Depot was a major supplier of jackets for Trans-Mississippi Federal cavalry and artillery regiments during the war. During the last year of the war it produced 79.120 cavalry jackets and 13.603 artillery ones. Unlike other manufacturing facilities, the St. Louis Depot made extensive use of sewing machines for its production.

 

Although it was a government facility, the Cavalry and Mounted Service Artillery jackets manufactured at the Saint Loius Depot present a number of differences from the regulations, both from contractor and army depot manufactured jackets, which you can see in the videos below. Those particular features make them easy to identify.
